Blogging - pro or con when job searching?
July 28, 2008 – 2:32 pmWell, the time seems to be arriving where I want to be reaching out to see what sorts of employment opportunities exist for me - either out this way, where I live, or in a pure telecommuting role.
I have a great job now, but it requires a sometimes lengthy commute - and beyond that, I have been in relatively the same role for a rather long time. Change can be good… and sometimes you just feel it in your gut when it is time to change.
Interestingly, I also saw this news article today, which stated:
“Kendall County is still the fastest-growing county in the nation, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.”
The big question that I am curious about - will having a blog be a positive factor, or a negative factor in my job search? Or will it perhaps play no role at all?
Of course, the answer depends in part on what type of roles I pursue.
I am guessing that it will likely be easier for me to see it when it is a pro than when it is a con.
The other question this raises is whether or not this will effect my blogging? Will I shy away from some topics, fearing what a prospective employer would think? Sure hope not.
My ideal employer would understand the pervasiveness of blogging, and the unique and powerful opportunities that all the various social software “channels” provide… and would - of course - be delighted to see that I am familiar with the technologies and models that are so ubiquitous on the web.
My hope is that any prospective employer would — at the very least — be able to see that I am playing with the technology here, and am not tied to these vehicles as my only means of self-expression :)
The web is a big playground of information to me. I enjoy watching it all unfold, but why not play at the same time? That’s simply how I learn best.
Well, time will tell how this all turns out. Will I even push ahead with my job search? Will something turn up relatively quickly? Regardless - I thought it would be interesting to mark this day with a blog posting… who knows, maybe in the weeks and months ahead, I will be writing more on this topic???
