Testing out Google’s AdSense for Domains

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

I have a domain that I rather likehttp://www.artbotica.com — but do not have the time to dedicate to doing anything substantial with it… so I decided to test out Google’s (new?) AdSense for Domains.

Pligg site gets plenty of spammers, not much else

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Every once in a while, I get a very positive e-mail from what I am guessing is a real, genuine human… a visitor of High Vibe It, a site that runs on the pligg platform. But most of action seems to come from spammers. In fact, I am guessing they must be using automated tools… otherwise, I fail to understand how the time it takes to submit a story is really worth the link — especially now that I am discarding them so quickly.

Working with DotNetNuke now

Friday, November 21st, 2008

While fighting the good fight against spammers at High Vibe It – a site that runs on Pligg, I have found myself looking for more features and flexibility. It seems nothing will ever quite match the simplicity and flexibility of WordPress, but I feel compelled to get hands on with some other systems.

At first, I was tempted to work with Drupal, and still might. From a quick look around, it seemed I might even be able to use it as a Pligg replacement, and even import my Pligg content??? That would be great, if it works that way. Another great plus in my book is that it looks like it integrates with OpenID out of the box.

But since I am looking at DotNetNuke for a work related project already, I decided to dive in and work with it first.

Blogging – pro or con when job searching?

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Well, the time seems to be arriving where I want to be reaching out to see what sorts of employment opportunities exist for me – either out this way, where I live, or in a pure telecommuting role.

I have a great job now, but it requires a sometimes lengthy commute – and beyond that, I have been in relatively the same role for a rather long time. Change can be good… and sometimes you just feel it in your gut when it is time to change.

Interestingly, I also saw this news article today, which stated:

“Kendall County is still the fastest-growing county in the nation, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.”

The big question that I am curious about – will having a blog be a positive factor, or a negative factor in my job search? Or will it perhaps play no role at all?

Of course, the answer depends in part on what type of roles I pursue.

I am guessing that it will likely be easier for me to see it when it is a pro than when it is a con.

The other question this raises is whether or not this will effect my blogging? Will I shy away from some topics, fearing what a prospective employer would think? Sure hope not.

My ideal employer would understand the pervasiveness of blogging, and the unique and powerful opportunities that all the various social software “channels” provide… and would – of course – be delighted to see that I am familiar with the technologies and models that are so ubiquitous on the web.

My hope is that any prospective employer would — at the very least — be able to see that I am playing with the technology here, and am not tied to these vehicles as my only means of self-expression :)

The web is a big playground of information to me. I enjoy watching it all unfold, but why not play at the same time? That’s simply how I learn best.

Well, time will tell how this all turns out. Will I even push ahead with my job search? Will something turn up relatively quickly? Regardless – I thought it would be interesting to mark this day with a blog posting… who knows, maybe in the weeks and months ahead, I will be writing more on this topic???
